Opera in three acts and four paintings
Libretto by the composer and Peter Pears, from William Shakespeare’s play of the same name
Premiered June 11, 1960 at Jubilee Hall in Aldeburgh
In a forest near Athens, during the night of the solstice, the worlds mingle. There is the kingdom of fairies, troubled by the discord between King Oberon and Queen Titania. But there are also four lovers caught in a desires crossover, and a group of artisans who came to rehearse a play away from the city. Thanks to the enchanted juice of a flower, the elf Puck causes confusion and interferes with all these characters. Following the dreamlike meanders of one of the most beloved plays of Shakespeare, Benjamin Britten writes a captivating opera, in which each world is differentiated by an ineffable musical material. For this lyrical masterpiece of the twentieth century, Robert Carsen created an enchanting show that made the beautiful evenings of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in 1991 and 1992, before his leaving to conquer the world. He is back in the place where he was born, this courtyard of the l’Archevêché where the summer night is Provencal and the dream in the open sky.
